Smoking is strictly prohibited on trains and stations of the Indian Railways, under penalty of fines, and smoke detectors have been installed in some trains. It is important to note that if smoke detectors are triggered, the train will slow down and can therefore penalize everyone. Offenders can be identified and punished.
Even if some smokers choose to smoke in unauthorized areas, it remains illegal and can disrupt the safety of all passengers. I recommend smoking outside the station before boarding the train and considering the use of nicotine patches or gum to help you quit smoking.
Remember that a few hours without smoking are nothing compared to the wonders that await you in India.
Have a safe trip and take care!
